Act of the Covenant

Philippians 3:1-11

Verse 3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—

We know that we are to bear the mark of God and the covenant but we also know that it can’t out of mere obligation, but how can we tell if it is serving Him through love?

We have all had the experience of being told to do something that we didn’t want to do. Maybe it was taking out the trash or taking the dog for a walk in the rain. No matter what the thing was we knew we had to do it whether we wanted to or not. This is what obeying the law out of obligation feels like. It makes the rules God set as a safeguard feel like a burden that drag us down and make us resent them.

To look at the law without it being an obligation doesn’t mean that the obedience is necessarily easier but it does mean that we will desire to do it out of our love of the One asking it of us. It is definitely easier to obey a boss we like than it is one that we endure. It is also easier to obey the requests of those that we know have our best interest at heart. Like a loving parent telling the child not to touch the hot stove, we need to know that God’s laws are meant for our protection.

This covenant that God made with His people isn’t about having us under His controlling thumb. It is about His lovingly shaping us in relationship with Him. He wants to keep us from the pitfalls of living like the world and therefore has set up a system where we can act out our responding love to His love for us.

These actions of the covenant are nothing less than our seeing His love for us and desiring nothing more than to do everything we can to show our love to Him by living as He has asked us to live. There will be times when it isn’t easy but our love for Him will help us push through the struggle and we will make it happen. We will be proving that He is our God and the only One we serve. Our love to Him will be evident as we neglect everything that tries to come in and steal our love. One of the most obvious ways this love will show up is our obedience in sharing our love for Him with others and helping others in the covenant community to grow in their love for Him. This is how we live in covenant with our God.

Making It Personal

Do you find yourself regretting having to obey God’s laws? What is something you know you should be obeying Him about that you haven’t wanted to do? How are you going to show Him love today?

Making It Personal Kids

What is something that Jesus says not to do that you sometimes want to do anyway? Does not obeying Jesus say you don’t love Him like you should? How can you obey Jesus today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for loving us so much that You want to protect us, even from ourselves. Help us see our need to desire to obey You in all things. We love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
