Worthy of Praise
Verse 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Today we take our final bite-size look at the list of things we are to fix our thoughts on as Sabbath keeping people – things that are praiseworthy.
The first thing that we need to look at regarding praiseworthy is who it is we are praising. To be true Sabbath keepers we need to be set on who alone is worthy of our praise – our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. We are not to be singing the praises of just anyone or anything.
Praise seems to be a word that is loosely thrown around these days, even among churches. We use it for singing songs, songs in general and even times of the Sunday services. But praise in its purest form is wholehearted focus on God. The praising that is going on in heaven, even at this very moment, is all about Him and only about Him. There is a constant refrain of praise being raised to Him as He sits on the throne. This has been going on from eternity past and will continue through eternity future. Continuous praise for the only One who deserves it.
So what things in our lives are praise worthy that we should be fixing our thoughts on? Maybe a better question to ask ourselves would be what would He think is praiseworthy? He doesn’t desire our praise because He is on some kind of power trip. He desires our praise because He knows He alone is worthy of it. He alone knows us and what we need, not just in the physical sense but in the spiritual as well. He has done and continues to do things that are more than we could have even known we needed.
Of course the thing that we needed most in life was a redeemer to save us from the death that our sins deserve. Before the beginning of the earth the plan was already in place to pay the price for our sins. Before we took our first breath, He had already died and rose again to life to not only remove our sins from our record but to conquer death so that we never have to die. Yes, our bodies will stop functioning but our bodies are nothing but a temporal shell. He created us for more. He has chosen us to spend eternity praising Him. Aren’t these reason enough to praise Him? Not just for now but for all of eternity!
