Worthy is the King!

Psalm 145

Verse 1 I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.

Today we begin a study of exaltation to the Lord as put forth by King David in Psalm 145.

Exaltation is an act of putting something above all else, in this case the Lord. David understood the need to put God in His rightful place of above all. Notice that David addresses God as the King, this is important because it shows that he isn't just saying God is above him in his life but that God is the KING above ALL.

To exalt God is not just about what we say but how we act. When we act like we are the only one that matters or say things like, "looking out for number one" we are taking Him off His rightful throne and placing ourselves there. We know all too well how easy it is to put ourselves on the throne of our hearts and therefore know the decision that leads to exalting self.

When there is a choice to be made it shows where our allegiance resides, no matter how we decide, the truth is revealed. We will either be choosing to put God above all or ourselves above all. We may think-that we are making the decision based on what is best for our friends or family but the truth is that choice only puts them on the throne above all others.

One thing this psalm will help us with is setting our hearts ready for rightful praise, not thinking of self or those we love, but looking to Him and Him alone. This is the decision that is most needed because if we aren’t choosing wisely about this then the rest of our words and actions mean nothing. Singing the songs during the church service without having Him on the throne of our lives actually is us singing praise about ourselves.

As we go through this psalm let’s be intentional about who we are exalting and grow in our understanding about why He alone is worthy of our highest praise.

Making It Personal

Who is on the throne in your life? What proof is in your life that He is in that place? What needs to happen in your life to solidify His place as the most exalted in your life?

Making It Personal Kids

What do you think it looks like if Jesus is the King of your life? Do you do the things that prove Jesus is the King? What can you do today for King Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, we exalt You. You alone are worthy of our praise. Please help us learn how to exalt You in the way You deserve. In Jesus’ name, amen.
