Warmth and Comfort

Matthew 5:13-16

Verse 16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Yesterday we talked about how light gives us a clarity about ourselves allowing us to see our blemishes so we can clean them up so we can reflect Christ in the purest way. Today we look at another way that light is used in our lives.

Have you ever looked at a house that had lights on when it was dark or nearing dark outside? It looks cozy and inviting, doesn’t it? That is because it gives us a sense of peace and comfort. We imagine hanging out with friends, talking and laughing.

If we live as a light of the world our lives should be inviting to those around us. The world is full of darkness and pain and though those are a part of the Christians life too, we aren’t dealing with it alone like those of the world are. We have the Light of the world with us and so we can rely on His strength. That is what the world is missing and another way we can be reflective of Him.

When trials come into our lives – and they do – we turn to the One who has been through trials in this world and knows how we feel. The people of the world don’t have that comfort. When troubles come into the life of the non-Christian they don’t always know a healthy place to turn. Often they turn to the comforts of this world – drugs, food, alcohol, and other things that can cause even more issues for them. What a comfort it would be if they knew there was another option, one that could lead to a lasting peace. This is why we are called to be His light in the world.

When we turn to God and His followers to find comfort and wisdom in our times of troubles we find exactly that. We learn that we aren’t alone and we don’t have to fight this trial on our own. But how do those who don’t have God and fellow believers find someone to turn to for true comfort and peace? That is where the image of a home with lights on a dark night comes to stand for what we are supposed to be. How can they be drawn to the Light of the world if we are not being who He has said we are to be? If we are not reflecting Him, how are they going to see Him and know His comfort? We are to be His witnesses, have you told those who are struggling around you how He has brought you through the trials in your life? But don’t just tell them, be there to listen and comfort them too.

Making It Personal

Have you ever been the light in someone’s dark hour? Who around you is in a dark hour now? How can you be a light to them?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever been sad and someone said or did something to encourage you? Have you been the one to do the cheering? Who can you help today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the comfort You give us through the Holy Spirit when we are struggling. Please help us be the comfort the world needs so that they can see You and give You all the glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
