Two By Two

Verse 1 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
Have you ever been asked to do something and thought that there is no way you are qualified to do that? It can cause nerves to be stretched to their limit. Switch the thought a minute. What if you were given everything you needed to do the job before even being sent to do the job? The second option seems better doesn't it?
We find Jesus calling His disciples together and then giving them the authority to do things average men couldn't do. He then divides them two by two and then He starts to tell them what they are to be doing.
Up until this point they had been following Him and letting Him do everything but now Jesus is telling them that they aren't going to just be wallflowers anymore. I don't know about you but that could seem awfully nerve wracking. After all this isn't a small mission they are on. They are having to go from bystanders and observers to be in the mission and performing miracles. These are the same men who Jesus had told at sea not to be scared. So why is Jesus turning to them now?
Jesus didn't call them just to be followers; He had long term goals for them that would include them ministering after He left this earth. He was training them to be leaders. This was their practice round. They weren't to wander far at this point; focusing on fellow Jews with the message that the kingdom of God was near. They didn't understand fully themselves what this meant and yet that is the what Jesus was telling them to do.
Jesus is calling us to this following into ministry too. We may not totally understand the fullness of the Gospel but we are called to share the news that Jesus is God, that He died for sins and that He is coming again. He is sending us out to spread His word of hope to the world.
Making it personal
Have you thought about the call Jesus has put on our lives to share the Gospel? Have you answered this call? What steps are you taking to answer this call on your life?
Making it personal kids
Practice telling others about God by sharing with your family the things you have learned about God. Do a "God-sighting" time of sharing cool things that you think happened because God made it happen.
Father God, help us to share You and Your wondrous works with those around us. Thank You for all the small glimpses of Your power that we see daily that we can share with others to tell them about You. In Jesus' name, amen.
