Trust Kicking Fear to the Curb

Psalm 112

Verse 7 They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

We talked yesterday about how we are steadied by God’s being present in our lives always and in today’s reading the psalmist seems to take that to another level that may seem a bit extreme. Can we really come to a place of never fearing bad news? ! I imagine that there are very few people in the world who never fear bad news coming their way. In fact we may think that the very idea of that is delusional. So how can the psalmist say this as a way of praising God?

The concept may seem very far-fetched. Our lives seem bombarded with bad news and we all know people who get shocking news. Many of us have gotten calls or had doctors’ visits that rock our world. Within an instant lives as we have known it changes and we find ourselves in a whirlwind of days in the aftermath. The psalmist himself had days like that which he could point to and share a story that would bring our hearts to compassion. That is why he words his psalm as he does, “They will have no fear of bad news.”

It isn’t saying that those times won’t come and shake up life as we know it. His point is that we won’t fear that call or word from the doctor. And the reason we won’t fear is because if we trust in Him, we know that He has a plan in the bad news.

Praising God for the bad news is not the first response that comes to mind but when we are trusting Him we will seek to know His plan in the trial. Is it so we can learn something we need to know? Is it so that we will come closer to Him and lean into His loving arms? Can we trust Him to know His plan and not tell us what it is?

When we trust Him, we are steadfast in Him. We will know that His love for us will never leave us alone and His plan will always be for our good and will bring Him glory. It could be that the bad news we fear the most, reveals where we don’t trust Him in life.

Making It Personal

Do you fear bad news? How can being steadfast in relationship with God and trusting Him relieve the fear of bad news? Where don’t you trust Him?

Making It Personal Kids

Are you afraid of bad things happening? Do you trust Jesus to help you through bad things? If He will help you through, is there any reason to be afraid?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being trustworthy. Forgive us for not trusting You as fully as we should. Open our eyes to see where we don’t trust You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
