Traveling in a Caravan

Luke 5:17-26

Verse 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.

I'm sure we would all agree road trips are better with friends. This journey to the cross is the same. This man was blessed with the best of fellow journeyers.

Word of Jesus and His performing miracles was spreading but instead of just telling their friend what Jesus could do for him this group of friends took their paralyzed friend to Jesus. When they couldn't get in the door they didn't give up they tried the roof and lowered him down in front of Jesus. But Jesus didn't focus on the man's physical state. He looked at the eternal. Notice though that Jesus' perception is more than the man in front of Him. Verse 20 says that Jesus saw "their faith" and told the man his sins were forgiven.

This scene was stirring up the thoughts of the religious leaders around the room. Jesus read their thoughts and called them out on it. His reason for forgiving the man's sins first was to prove something to all in attendance. That He wasn't just a healing prophet. These men would have known the prophecies about the Messiah showing His power in miracles. But forgiving sins wasn't something that everyone had license to do and there were procedures that had to be gone through by the priests. Jesus' forgiving the man's sins was considered blasphemy since it was the same as saying He was God, which of course He is.

Let's get back to the friends. They didn't bring their friend to be forgiven of his sins but they did bring him for healing. I wonder if they would have brought him to Jesus wanting both the forgiveness of sins and healing if they had known that was possible. That brings us to ourselves. We live in a time of knowing Jesus forgives sins, but do we care enough about our friends to bring them to Jesus for the forgiving of sins? Do we love them enough to want them to know the forgiveness we have found in Christ's sacrifice on the cross? Do we have the kind of faith that could change our friend's life?

Making it personal

Earlier in our journey we identified people in our life that we wanted to share the love of Christ with, how are you doing in building that relationship? If you have started growing the relationship with them to show them the Savior, great job! Keep up the good work. If you have yet to start, there is no day like today to take the first steps with them.

Making it personal kids

Do you have friends that you care so much about that you would go through the trouble of carrying them and then breaking through the roof to get them to Jesus? How about just talking to them about Jesus? Start by choosing a way to do something for them to show them Jesus' love.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for sending Jesus to forgive our sins once and for all. Help us bring our unsaved friends to Jesus. Help us love our friends like Jesus does. In Jesus' name, amen.
