Though Others Slay Me...

Psalm 119:17-24

Verses 23-24 Though rulers sit together and slander me, Your servant will meditate on Your decrees. Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.

We mentioned yesterday the danger of walking close to the sin line so that we don't look odd to those around us. But it actually can be more than just a questioned reputation.

The psalmist knew the pain of not just being looked at as odd but had actually endured slander. While slander is hurtful when it is from more than one person it is even worse. But the psalmist endured an even more harmful situation as it was rulers that sat together talking about him.

Though he was dealing with this hurt and likely the fallout as his name was tarnished for standing for God and His statutes, the psalmist knew he couldn't buckle under the pressure. He understood the need to lean into God even more. Instead of running away, he leaned into his true Master, the ruler of his heart. Instead of rehashing what was being said about him, he turned to God and meditated on His laws.

The psalmist knew that it wasn't going to do any good to focus on what others thought of him, it only mattered what God said. Instead of looking at what would gain him the admiration of the people of the world, he looked at the standard he wanted to be measured by.

There are times we will experience the same kind of rejection and slander. It may be from strangers or it may come from those closest to our heart. The question is what are we going to do in those times? We need to make that decision before the moment comes, in fact, we should be living that decision despite what is being said. We need to be focused on how we align with God and know that is best. No matter how we are treated by others.

Making It Personal

Whose opinion matters most to you, God's or other people? How does your life reflect that answer? How often do you lean in by meditating on His Word?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever had someone make fun of you because of your friendship with Jesus? Whose opinion matters most to you, Jesus' or other people? What is a way that you can focus more on the Bible?

Closing Prayer

Father, thanking for holding us close when we are mocked for standing up for You and Your ways. Give us the courage to always stand by You. In Jesus' name, amen.
