This or That
Verse 24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
Yesterday we started talking about the choices the religious teachers were making and how we need to be making decisions about who Jesus is in our lives. Today we see that Jesus gave them a chance to make a choice.
Jesus had the perfect question to ask these leaders, “John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?” This question kind of put them in a pickle. No matter their answer they would have a growing issue to deal with. If they said it was from God, they had to deal with Jesus and if they answered that it came from a human then the crowds would be against them and they would be right back where they started about losing their status.
Even though they were caught in a quandary about how to answer, both potential answers would have been going against themselves. If they said the works and teachings were from heaven then they would have to admit that Jesus taught and did miracles by the same source which would mean that if they were against Him, which they obviously were, they were against Heaven. On the other hand if they said it was a human source that John acted from, they would risk losing their control in telling the people how to live and believe.
Life is full of choices. Some big, some small. We can’t just make rash decisions based on personal emotions of the moment. We can become so used to making snap decisions that we don’t take much time to actually think about the choices we are making or their consequences and that can lead to some bad habits in life.
This is a type of situation that we can find ourselves in. Do we choose the way that makes us in the right place with God or the choice that puts us in a good light with others? Are the choices we are making reflecting God and His ways for others to see or do those around us see us as part of the world’s landscape? We need to make intentional decisions that point others towards God and move us closer to Him day by day.
Making It Personal
What are some decisions you have made in life that don’t reflect God and His ways? What are some decisions that have been made with Him in mind? What is a decision He is wanting you to make today?
Making It Personal Kids
How hard is it to make a decision? What does it mean to choose the choice that would please God? Do you want to please Jesus with your choices?
Father, we are sorry for the times we have made the choice against You. Please give us wisdom in future decisions. We want to live like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
