The Hope of Deliverance

Deuteronomy 18:15-19

Verse 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him.

Our next prophecy brings us to the time of Moses. This prophecy was given to the people of Israel by God through their leader Moses. As a leader Moses had not always held the respect of the people. In fact at times they rejected him. He had been their leader for many years as they wandered in the wilderness. He had also led in their deliverance from slavery to Egypt.

This Prophet that would be like Moses was going to serve in the way that Moses had served. Moses was a different kind of leader. He wasn’t a leader in the way a king would rule. Nor was he a leader in the way that the religious leaders of Jesus’ time led the people. Moses led as one of the people. In Egypt he had enjoyed the finery of living in the palace. Jesus had in the same way enjoyed the glory of heaven before coming to earth and leading as one of the humans He had created. Moses had to go into the desert prior to leading the people of God. Jesus also spent time in the wilderness prior to His ministry.

When Moses came back to lead the people out of captivity the Israelites weren’t sure if this guy was someone they wanted to trust. When Jesus came to show His people the way, He was rejected by many. After leading his people to deliverance, Moses gave the people the law from God. As Jesus was revealing the way to deliverance from sin, He explained the law and showed them the meaning behind it.

Just as Moses had told the people what God had commanded of them, Jesus told the people what God had commanded Him to say. God had given His people a glimpse of what the Promised One would look like. Moses had lived as a living example of what to expect. He knew that the law given by God would require more than the animal sacrifices could ever cover and he had the hope of God sending the Ultimate Sacrifice that would uphold the law and pay the price of sin, giving all of God’s people the hope of salvation.

Making It Personal

Does knowing the law help you see your need for a deliverer? Do you see Jesus as the leader of your life? How are you letting Him lead you in your life right now?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever played Follow the Leader? What does it mean to follow Jesus as your leader? How can you follow Jesus as leader today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for not leaving Your way as something to wander around until we find it. Thank You for giving us a leader to follow and obey. Help us learn to follow Jesus without wandering away. In Jesus’ name, amen.
