Verse 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
We have all had those moments when the cashier tells us our total and we have that thought, "What?! Can that be right?" That is kind of what these two men who were asking to be Jesus' disciples must have felt. Maybe we will think that too after learning more about what Jesus requires of His followers.
The first man was a teacher of the law. He had heard Jesus teach and probably had witnessed Jesus' relationship with His disciples. He want to be a part of this movement. Who knew, maybe this man, Jesus, would be the one that would help take over the kingdom from Rome and if he became a disciple he would be getting in on the ground floor, so to speak. His question shows that he is looking for Jesus to go places.
Jesus shows him the other side of the traveling about - no place to call your own. Jesus knew that this man didn't understand what all he would have to give up to follow Him. He knew this man didn't understand that it would mean persecution and death. This teacher was looking to follow Jesus to the heights of life but Jesus wanted him to see the truth, this journey isn't one of ease.
This man's wanted the power and prestige that he thought went with being a disciple. That is a common belief among people inquiring about Jesus these days. Many don't understand that following Jesus won't make us rich, famous and popular. Jesus promises the opposite. To be a true follower of Jesus we have to expect that people will not agree with our thinking or our beliefs and may even make fun of us.
Tomorrow we will talk about man number 2.
Making it personal
What are some things that you have hoped a life following Jesus would bring you? What is a misconception you had about following Jesus? Do you still wrestle with this misconception?
Making it personal kids
Have you ever tried walking in the footprints of your mom or dad? It isn't always easy to stretch your legs from one to the next one, is it? What are some things Jesus did that you could do too?
Father, Please expose the ways that we are misunderstanding what You require of us as Your followers. Teach us. In Jesus' name, amen.
