Staying Afloat in the Storms of Life

Updated: Mar 26

Matthew 8:23-27 Verse 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

In our story today are Jesus and His disciples. At least four of these men made their living on this very sea prior to following Jesus on this journey. That means these men knew how sudden and violent of a storm could appear as the cold east winds funneled through the ravines to the warmer air above the water. The Sea of Galilee has had waves as high as 10 feet on it during storms. This boat would have been wooden not metal like most of ours are today. These men knew this lake. They knew the storms. They knew Jesus.

Jesus gets into the boat and His disciples followed Him. This is an important point in this story and is hidden in plain sight before the drama begins. They had just heard Him tell two potential disciples they didn't have what it took to be His followers because they weren't willing to surrender and these men were still following. They had just heard what it was going to take and they were surrendered to following Him.

Fast forward a short time and notice the stark contrast between Jesus and the men. A sudden violent storm comes and is sloshing water into the boat and these former professional fisherman are freaking out! But not Jesus; He is asleep in the back of the boat. How can Jesus sleep through this? He doesn't have fear because He has control. The men start freaking out, shaking Jesus awake, "Lord, help us!" Jesus gets up telling them they lack faith and shouldn't be afraid and then He turns to the water and winds and tells them to stop and they do. The men's response? Shock that He could do this.

That sounds like us during the storms in life. Most of us haven't experienced great persecution due to our faith but we do face trials in our life that we want Him to take care of. How can we show our trust in Him if we lack faith? Our stress in times of trial has less to do with the trial and more to do with where we put our trust. Who is your trust in, you or Jesus?

Making it personal

What times in your life has your stress gotten out of control because you failed to seek Jesus to calm the storm? Jesus had enough peace to sleep in the midst of a terrible storm, where did His peace come from? Can you receive peace from the same source?

Making it personal kids

Do you have a toy boat or maybe a rubber duck? With your mom or dad's permission fill a sink or bathtub 1/2 way with water and try blowing on the water to make a storm and see how much the boat or duck rocks up and down. Then stop and see how longs it takes the waves to stop. Now talk about how amazing it was that the wind and water stopped immediately when Jesus told them to.

Closing Prayer

Father, we are sorry we don't have the faith we need in You. Please show us how to build our faith so we can follow You better. In Jesus' name, amen.
