Spring is for Planting

Matthew 13:3-9; 18-23

Verse 3 - Then he told them many things in parables, saying:“A farmer went out to sow his seed.

Yesterday we learned why Jesus taught using parables. Today we have an example of His parables. Jesus was making His point using four different possible scenarios when the Gospel is given. Let's look at each of them.

Let's start with the basics. Things in a parable represent something else. For example in today's story the seed represents the Gospel - the truth of Jesus' journey to the cross. As we go through the four different soils that the seed fell on we will learn more things that are representing something else.

1. The Path - This soil is hard-packed and not suitable for growing. It represents a hardhearted person who hears the Word of God but it doesn't sink in, there is no spiritual response in favor of the Truth of Jesus. The evil one comes along and the person is easily carried away.

2. The Rocky Area - This area doesn't have soil for the seeds to fall into. This represents people who are excited to receive the Word but since there is no soil they can't take root. When persecution comes because they understand the Word they can't handle it and will crumble, leaving the Truth behind.

3. The Thorny Area - This soil was tough on the seed because the thorns choke out the seeds. Here the area represents people who hear the Word but are too concerned with the things of this world and wanting more things of their own to let the seed grow in their hearts.

4. The Good Soil - This soil represents a heart that the Holy Spirit has softened to the Word and it not only grows spiritually but abounds. It refers to someone who hears, understands and acts upon the truth of the Word and therefore produces a huge crop even to a hundred times what was planted.

What kind of soil are you?

Making it personal

Have you ever thought of yourself as soil? What are some ways that the fault of the bad soils show up in our world? Do they show in your life? Are you sowing the Word? Are you paying attention to the soil types of those around you?

Making it personal kids

If the weather is nice go outside with mom and dad and see if you can find soil to represent each of these kinds of soil. Talk about what they represent and see if you can find any plants that are growing good in those places.

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for helping us understand the parable of the soils. Please cultivate our hearts to be good soil that is hearing and understanding Your Word and give us the wisdom to live it out. In Jesus' name, amen.
