Son, You Need to…

Matthew 21:23-32

Verse 28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

We have been talking about how important it is to make intentional decisions. To illustrate the point Jesus was trying to make for the religious leaders He gave them a parable about a father and his two sons. A father with two sons. This kind of sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

This is the second parable we have had that has a father with 2 sons. In both of them the father is loving. Neither parable says anything negative about the father. We of course know that Jesus was using both fathers as an example of God the Father. In today’s story we see a father who wants some work done in the vineyard. He does what any father of young men would do, he asks his boys to work in the vineyard. This is something we don’t always think about as loving, especially when we are the child, but it is loving to train up a child by teaching them the satisfaction of a job well done.

Working a vineyard isn’t a glamorous job. There are sweat and scrapes involved as well as bugs and stains. Since grapes thrive on full sunshine there is little to no sun, so that also can mean sunburn for the worker. The father knew it wasn’t an easy job but he also knew that it wasn’t out of the sons’ capabilities.

God is the same kind of loving Father. He has work for us to do. We aren’t to just enjoy a seat in His house during a weekly visit to His house. He wants a daily relationship with us and it isn’t all about what He can do for us. He has work for us to do and He has equipped us with the various tools to ensure our being able to execute them. He has given us an instruction manual (the Bible) and various teachers to help us learn to apply it. He also has given us His Holy Spirit who teaches us deep in our spirit. But are we willing to go to work for Him?

Making It Personal

Has God asked you to work for Him? Have you felt like you were ill-equipped for the job? Have you studied the Word and asked the Spirit to help you understand how to apply it for what He is asking you to do?

Making It Personal Kids

Have your mom and dad ever asked you to help out around the house? Is it always easy to obey? Did you know that God has work for you to do?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for Your loving way towards us. We know You have called us to work in Your fields. Please give us wisdom and strength to obey You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
