Singing, Guidance and Delight

Psalm 119:169-176

Verses 172-174 May my tongue sing of Your word, for all Your commands are righteous. May Your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen Your precepts. I long for Your salvation, Lord, and Your law gives me delight.

The psalmist began his closing stanza with praying for understanding, delivery and with praise for God and His word. Today we follow the man of song as he gives that praise to the Lord.

The psalmist starts this section doing what he knew best, singing about God and His righteousness. He isn’t praising God for what the Lord has done for him but is glorifying Him because of who He is. This is the true essence of praise. It is our purest worship. God is worthy of all praise and worship because there is no one like Him. He is mightier than the biggest army, wiser than the smartest person and holier than the best behaved person.

It is because of who He is that the psalmist is praising His word. The Lord is without blemish and that makes His law pure righteousness. His commands are totally in line with His holiness, this alone would be reason to praise Him, but the psalmist knew there was more. He should be praised because He had given His law, without the law we couldn’t know His holiness.

Next the man of song continues his praise by singing about how God’s hand protects him because he chooses the law of the Lord. As we have said before, this isn’t obeying the law as a payment for God’s favor but knowing that a loving parent has a better relationship with the child who is obedient. Obedience brings joy to the parent and child or in the case of the Commandments, joy to God and His followers.

To finish off our verses for the day the psalmist again expresses his longing for salvation, to be rescued from the persecution because of his love of the Lord and the law. He also speaks of the delight that the he finds in the law. This man of song can’t help but praise the Lord because he knows that his life would amount to nothing if not for the way the Lord guides and protects him. We should praise God for the way He guides and protects us too.

Making It Personal

When was the last time you praised God for His righteousness? Does the law make you feel protected in God’s hand? What does God’s salvation mean to you?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some things to praise Jesus about? Do you feel like Jesus protects you? How did Jesus bring the ultimate salvation for you?

Closing Prayer

Father, we praise You for Your righteousness. There is none as holy as You. We praise You for the protection, guidance and salvation You give us. Help us delight in Your law so we can bring You glory in how we live. In Jesus’ name, amen.
