Singing from Joyful Obedience

Psalm 132

Verse 9 “May your priests be clothed with your righteousness; may your faithful people sing for joy.’”

Knowing from our discussion yesterday that we need to be clothed with righteousness we need to remember that this righteousness needs to be associated with songs of praise.

We can become so consumed with acting and speaking righteousness that we forget the need to do it with joy. When we view it as work to maintain a righteous kind of life we can be sure that we are doing it with the wrong heart. The fact that we find living as He commanded us to as drudgery speaks to the fact that we see righteousness in the way of trying to gain His favor or working to win our trip to heaven.

Living the Christian life isn’t about trying to keep God’s attention. We have His attention. In fact, nothing we do is without His attention. He watches over us no matter where we are. David understood this well as he shares in Psalm 139 various places God sees us.

But God sees more than just the physical places we are. God sees straight to the motives in the deepest places of our heart. He sees the thoughts that float around in our head and knows where they came from. This knowledge He has of us is why it is important that we evaluate the truth of the source of our obedience.

If our obedience is driven from obligation we will miss one of the key components of obedience that pleases the Lord. But when we are obeying Him from a heart of love it will be obvious not only to Him but to others as well. There will be a telltale sign of joy no matter the circumstance. This isn’t to say that the direction He is telling us to go will always be what we would have chosen, but we will find joy in obeying.

This joy will allow us to sing for joy as we join for worship because our obedience comes from faithful hearts. This will bring God joy as well as He sees our hearts devoted to Him. Let’s come before Him rejoicing!

Making It Personal

What is the motivation for your obedience? Do you find joy in obeying God? What is a place in your heart that may need some work on your motive?

Making It Personal Kids

Why does it matter what your motive is as long as you obey? Do your mom and dad like it better when you obey because you love them or when you obey because you have to? Are you happy you get to obey Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, search our hearts and see if there is anything in us that offends You. Give us hearts that desire to obey You because of the love in our hearts. We love You, Father, and desire to be who You want us to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
