Shock After Shock

Luke 1:10-18

Verse 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

The silence has been broken and yet the story is just getting started. The old priest is in for another surprise, one that may be harder to grasp than meeting an angel in the holy place. This visit from the angel was not a random visit, no, this was one of those life changing moments. When the lots fell to Zechariah he probably thought that was the highlight of his life but when he would tell this story in the future, the lots were a detail that were nearly lost in the rest of the story.

The angel commands him to not be afraid and we can know that probably worked as well as it would on us. Zechariah wasn’t instantly OK with the angel standing there with him and yet the next words would have his immediate attention. A baby?! Yes, they had been praying for one for years but the time for that was long past. This couldn’t really be happening. Wait! What was he saying now? Of course the baby would bring them joy, they had waited a long, long time.

The next thing Zechariah learns about his son is something that would bless any parent, “he will be great in the sight of the Lord.” This couple who had been so faithful and obedient to the Lord would have a son that would be in line with the Lord and His ways. But the list didn’t stop there, this was going to be some kind of son! He is to be raised as a Nazarite and would be filled with the Holy Spirit before birth. The being filled with the Spirit was a head shaker too; up until now the Holy Spirit only came upon someone for a short time.

And then came the big shocker, he wasn’t going into the family business of being a priest, he was going to be a prophet that would be setting the scene for the coming Messiah. This wasn’t just big news because of his wife was going to have a baby, or that their son would not be living as a priest, the angel had just said that the long-awaited Messiah would be coming soon! The Messiah had been promised for many generations and it was finally going to happen. But then he comes back to his earlier doubts, how could it be when he and his wife were so far along in years? The doubts can come so easily when we don’t see the way, but we need to remember that the Lord is a promise keeper.

Making It Personal

Are there things that you have been praying for but doubt that He will really deliver? Is there a way that getting what you want would fit in God’s greater plan or is it more for your hearts desires? What can you pray for that would help you serve His kingdom?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some things that you pray for? Are those things more about you or more about Jesus and His desires? What is something that you can pray for that would please Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for having a plan. Help us know Your way better so that we can pray for the things that align with Your will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
