Secure and Triumphant

Psalm 112

Verse 8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

The psalmist continues down the path of how to praise God in the fearful times of life. Today he focuses more on when those fears are based on people around us that are causing issues. Yesterday we looked more at the times where we need to trust in God to rid ourselves of fears of what could happen but today we talk about fear that is based on what we see and what we are dealing with. Fear based on the unknown versus fear based on the known.

The psalmist may have known the personal fear that comes with being hunted by enemies, but there are other types of situations that cause us to fear others. It may be abuse or bad situations with others who try to take advantage of us. Maybe it is that we are dealing with someone spreading lies about us. No matter the situation it isn’t pleasant to be in a place where we have fear of others.

While this fear is natural, we can once again leave fear in the past when we take peace in the presence of God. In the midst of these kinds of trials it is easy to feel insecure but in Christ we have every reason to feel secure.

Fear of people who are real in our life can draw our attention away from God and that is when our fear starts to take over. Yes, there can be a healthy level of fear for personal safety. We don’t want to ignore the heat of the stove or not be aware of the cars around us on the road but there comes a point when the fear of personal safety isn’t really in our control and that is when we must find our security in our relationship with God.

The last thing that the psalmist reminds us in this verse of his song is that we will see an end to our trials. And it will be in the end that we see the triumph over our foes, meaning that we may not see the relief we want until it is the end of our trials. But when we find our security in God, we will see that we don’t have to fear the day to day scary moments. He will care for us even when we are unsure how we will make it. He knows the end and has it all in control.

Making It Personal

Have you ever felt fear of other people? How can you hold to security in God when you feel this kind of fear? Do you need to hold to His security now?

Making It Personal Kids

Do you have people you are afraid of? Have you told mom and dad who you are afraid of? Have you prayed to Jesus about the person you are afraid of?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for always being there for us. We praise You for the security we can have in You. Please help us know that we need not fear man when we have You by our side. In Jesus’ name, amen.
