Salvation Through the Fulfiller of the Law

Psalm 119:89-96

Verses 93-94 I will never forget your precepts, for by them You have preserved my life. Save me, for I am Yours; I have sought out Your precepts.

After our discussion yesterday about the way that the rest of creation serves the Lord through their obedience to the law He set forth, the psalmist continued his prayer praising God for the way God preserves his life through the obedience of the Lord’s law.

We have discussed at various points of our study of this psalm the importance of keeping the law of God constantly before us so that we don’t forget the things He has commanded of us. This whole song is an ode to the law and what it means for our lives. The law is a preserver of relationships, both our relationship with God and our relationship with those around us.

Of course it doesn’t improve all relationships. Those that hate the law will not be excited that we are so committed to it. This is the same reason Jesus had advisories. With Jesus being perfect in every way we would think that everyone would have loved Him. The fact is that it was His perfection at loving and keeping the law that brought haters out.

Knowing that it isn’t living the law perfectly that builds the relationships we may ask why it matters that we keep it in front of us at all times. Of course, having the law in front of us at all times and obeying the law at all times is not the same thing. There is no one that can keep it at all times, for that matter there is no one that can keep it in the forefront of their minds all the time.

The man of song goes on to ask the Lord to save him. He may not have known of the cross and resurrection but he knew that it was God alone that could save him. Not just from his enemies but also from his sins. The law was the standard and the psalmist wanted to remember that. Salvation is through Christ alone because He is the fulfillment of the law. Seeking out the law leads us to searching for the fulfillment of the law. We need to be looking deeply at Christ and His life. He showed us how to live by the spirit of the law in the face of opposition. This is how we can stand when others stand against us.

Making It Personal

Have you ever been in a situation where you faced opposition because of the law of God? What should you do when that happens? Where do you need to stand firmer in the law?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever had someone get upset because you wanted to obey Jesus? What would you tell someone that told you not to obey Jesus? How much do you want to be like Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for providing our salvation. We want to be more like You and that requires seeking You and knowing Your ways. Give us wisdom in how to live according to Your law. In Jesus’ name, amen.
