Matthew 2:1-11
Verse 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
We started talking yesterday about the prophesied and yet unexpected visitors from the East. They did two very important things and we will take some time looking into them.
Having reached the house these men saw the child with His mother and bowed down to worship Him. We know that Mary knew that her son was the Son of God and had seen Him worshipped by Simeon and Anna at the time of His being presented in the Temple (Luke 2:22-38) but it likely still brought her awe to see her son worshipped. They weren't worshipping both mother and son, just the Son.
These men of high status were not there to simply pay respects to a new born member of royalty, they understood He was special because of His star and they were there to worship.
While we are not to worship anyone but God we do tend to give adoration of sorts to those we respect in authority, even those from other countries. But these men came to worship. They were there with purpose. You don't travel that long and far without great purpose.
Worship as we know it tends to be more about singing and maybe some Bible reading but this is so much more. This is worship that is willing to make the sacrifice. They sacrificed about 4 years of their lives. They had left family and friends behind to find the promised Child. They knew the new king would come as a child. Even when the Jewish people weren't looking for their king, these foreigners were ready and willing to seek Him out.
That should make us look at our own heart for worship. When we look at our lives we should see the same willingness and eagerness to seek Him. No matter the cost or time involved.
Making It Personal
What does your life say about your thoughts on worship? Where do you need to step up your worship? How are you going to worship Him better today?
Making It Personal Kids
What does it mean to worship? What are some ways that you worship? How can you worship Jesus today?
Closing Prayer
Father, we confess that we don't often worship You as we should. Help us see the need to worship You fully. In Jesus' name, amen.
