Road Trip!

Philippians 3:17-4:1

Verse 17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.

Having reminded us that we are to live in ways that show Christ is number one in our lives, Paul once again helps us remember that we aren’t in it alone.

Paul starts this section with the reminder to join together. It is so easy to think that our Christian walk is up to us and that we are alone in our struggles but that isn’t fully the truth. We need each other in various ways. We need those who help us know how to live and we need those that need guiding along the Christian path.

Road trips are more fun and memorable when taken with friends. While we may have a lot of fun and make tons of memories there will be things that we forget until another member of the road trip brings up the story. This is one way we can join together in our Christian walk. Since we are making the journey together, we will be able to help each other remember the things we may forget that we need to live as Christ would have us live.

Paul had just explained to his friends that he was on this journey to know Christ in a deeper way and now he wants them to remember that they too need to grow. We need to be modeling Godly living for those around us, especially those within the body of Christ. It is easier to obey when we see others doing it too and therefore we must remember that it will be easier for others when we are living as we should.

This isn’t a case of Paul tooting his own horn or even trying to drum up followers for himself, this was Paul saying, “I’m following Jesus, won’t you come along?” This is how we should be too. It is one of the reasons we should be very intentional about living as Christ would live. Living a holy life is a way of drawing others to Christ and that should always be our mission.

Making It Personal

When is a time you have been encouraged in your spiritual life by another believer? When have you encouraged others? What are you going to do today to join together with other believers?

Making It Personal Kids

How has someone encouraged you to love Jesus more? Have you encouraged someone to love Him more? How can you encourage someone today to know Jesus more?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for surrounding us with fellow believers to help us and encourage us to know You more. Help us see when another believer needs encouragement and give us the willingness to share truth with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
