Right Hand Protector

Psalm 121

Verse 5 The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

Knowing that the Lord never sleeps can comfort us as we know that He is always on watch. His watching over us is not just from the dangers in the darkness and the things that keep us up at night.

The fact that the Lord is watching over us should give us comfort on many levels. We can know that He is paying attention to all that is going on around us and in us. His watching over us isn’t just about the things that could cause us to stumble physically, His concern of us is greatly focused on our spiritual safety. He knows the things that cause us to stumble spiritually and He is watching over us to show us where the trouble spots are.

It isn’t that He doesn’t watch out for us physically, but we must remember that while we tend to be consumed with things of this life, He has a greater concern about the spiritual realm of life. The spiritual life is the life that will endure though this life and proceed through eternity. Our spiritual nature should be as important to us and have us aware of things that could cause us to walk aside from the path that Christ has laid out for us.

The psalmist says that the Lord is our shade on our right side. A ‘right hand man’ is someone that can be counted on at all times. The psalmist was making the point that we can always count on the Lord to be there for us. When we know that He is with us no matter the issue, we can rest in the shadow of His love and protection.

Knowing He is at our right hand should also give us the courage and strength to face whatever temptation comes our way. Even knowing that He is with us should encourage us to walk the path that He wants us to walk. And walking that path with Him will help us know just how worthy He is of our worship. The Lord of heaven and earth is our Creator and the fact that He is guiding us is one reason we should be worshiping Him along the journey of life.

Making It Personal

Does your worship reflect a relationship with Christ as your ‘right hand man?’ Do you look to Him for guidance when troubles come in your life or do you just ask Him to fix the issue? What do you need to worship Him about today?

Making It Personal Kids

How does it make you feel to know that Jesus is wanting to walk with you and help you be safe both physically and spiritually? What does Jesus want you to learn as you walk with Him? Do you worship Him for helping you?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being there whenever we need You. Help us learn to turn to You every time we don’t know what to do so that we not stumble on things that could trip us up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
