Verse 9 “May Your priests be clothed with Your righteousness; may Your faithful people sing for joy.’”
We have listened to the invitation for God to come to His new dwelling place and now we see the priests being put in place.
David knew the importance of having only godly priests in place for managing the place of worship. There had been plenty of examples for the king to see of priests who were not loyal to the Lord and who served the various false gods that were worshiped in the land.
By not clearing the land of the former occupants the people of God soon found themselves surrounded by people who made their own gods. They would carve them, mold them and fashion them out of other available materials. But these people wouldn’t worship in secret. They had very public worship as some of the gods required sacrifices, some even the sacrificing of children. These people should have been able to notice the differences as well as the similarities of this worship.
The fact that they didn’t recognize the mockery of the worship of these false gods, shows that they were out of sync with God and His ways. During the times of the judges there was a priest from the tribe of Levi that sold out and was a priest in the private shrine of Micah (different Micah than the minor prophet). Of all people, a Levite priest should have known better than to allow a member of God’s people to not only worship idols but also to make a shrine and hire a priest (Judges 17).
Micah thought he was safe in his idol worship because he had hired a Levite and sometimes we struggle with the same mindset when we think that we are safe because we are under God’s grace. We get so blasé about what means to worship. We think of worship in our own terms of how we think God would want it. We readily allow our thinking to override what God has said about how to worship Him.
There is a sense where we are priests. The barrier between God and His people has been demolished through Christ’s death on the cross. While the people of God in ancient times had to have a priest involved with their going to God in repentance and sacrifice, we have been given the gift of being in full connection with God ourselves.
Making It Personal
How often do you take advantage of having contact with God? Do you serve as a priest in service to your idols in life? What false gods do you have in your life?
Making It Personal Kids
Why are idols bad news? What idols do you have in your life? What do you need to do to get rid of what takes your time away from God?
Father, thank You for being our High Priest. Give us the wisdom so that we rid our lives of the things that rob us of Your joy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
