Peace Offering

Leviticus 3:1-5

Verse 1 If your offering is a fellowship offering, and you offer an animal from the herd, whether male or female, you are to present before the Lord an animal without defect.

We have another out of the ordinary Christmas passage but this is important as it shows us a way that God gave for His people to express their relationship with Him. We are no longer needing to make animal sacrifices but we can still use this picture that He gave as a tool of learning more about being in peace with Him.

The fellowship offering is also known as the peace offering. It was about living in peace with God. This was not a sacrifice about sin and repentance. This was an act of relationship. This offering was different than sacrifices in that some of the meat was available for the family to take back to their home and eat. There was a ceremony of the peace offering that did include burning some of the parts on the altar and giving some of the meat to the priests.

A peace offering was a way of being deliberate about their relationship with God. It took some effort in making sure the animal being offered was spotless and pure and while God no longer desires the sacrifice of animals He still has requirements about our fellowship with Him. He is still looking for a pure, unspotted sacrifice but what does that mean in our era?

This peace offering was a voluntary act. It was done because of the person’s relationship with God. He still desires a relationship with us. And He still wants us to desire a relationship with Him. But He doesn’t want just any relationship. He wants a relationship of peace. What does it take for us to live in peace with God? The biggest thing that gets in the way of our peace with God is rebellion and sin. Maybe we need to ask ourselves how much we desire peace with God.

Making It Personal

How much do you want a peaceful relationship with God? What do you think that would look like? What do you need to do differently in your life to be in peace with God?

Making It Personal Kids

What do you think it means to live in a peaceful relationship with God? How do you live in peace with God? Can disobeying get in the way of your relationship with Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, we are sorry for the times we seek other things, even sinful things, instead of living in peace with You. Help us know what needs to change in our lives to bring us to living in peace with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
