Peace Be Within You

Psalm 122

Verse 8 For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.”

After praying for peace for God’s people David draws the thought deeper and more personal.

Remember that these people were King David’s extended family. Being of the Jewish bloodline himself, David saw the significance of calling the family together as well as the need for there to be peace amongst the family.

In our verse today David makes a couple of interesting points beginning with, “For the sake of…” As you remember we are talking about praising God for His wonderful deeds. This makes this phrase by David seem even more out of place, but is it? The words, “for the sake of….” are really like saying, “because of …” It is for the person that the effort is being made.

David was saying it was for his family and friends that he was putting in the effort to see that every one of them would have inner peace. He wasn’t going on this journey to worship God for his joy and benefit solely. The psalmist was wanting all of his family and friends to know the joy of coming together to worship. While they were doing it to obey God, it needed to be more than that.

The second point that David was making had to do with, “Peace be within you.” Yes, David is blessing them with inner peace. This peace comes from the only one who can give us peace, Christ. Christ gives the Christian access to the peace that only He can give. David was inviting his family and friends to know this peace. By seeking God and obeying Him in the journeying to Jerusalem they could be seeing the joy and peace that come from knowing God on the level of a deep relationship.

But remember David says, that it is the peace in them that he wants them to know. This is not a peace that requires effort or that is ours to gain. It is a gift from the Holy Spirit. It comes from knowing that God is in control and relying on Him. And this is reason enough to seek His presence and worship along the whole way. We may not know the way we are to go but we know Who leads the way.

Making It Personal

Do you pray that your friends and family will come to know Christ? Do you talk to them about their relationship with Him? Do you have that peace within your heart?

Making It Personal Kids

Do you pray that your family and friends will come to be friends with Jesus? What does it mean to have peace from Jesus deep inside? Do you have peace inside from Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for giving us a peace that can’t be described. Give us an ever-growing desire to know You more and more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
