Passionate Prayer for Salvation

Psalm 119:145-152

Verses 145-146 I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord, and I will obey Your decrees. I call out to You; save me and I will keep Your statutes.

Today we start the nineteenth stanza of this song of praise for the Word of the Lord. The psalmist starts this section with a fervent prayer.

“I call with all my heart.” When was the last time that you have called out to God with all your heart? We may send up random prayers that we barely give any thought to or we may repeat the same prayer over and over about something that we want but it may not have the heart behind it that it should.

We aren’t a society of giving it everything you’ve got. We cheer for our favorite team to give it all they have to get a win but do we require the same of ourselves on an average day? Even our jobs may be given only the minimal effort. We hope everyone will give their best effort in relationships with us but we are more interested in what we can get from the other person than we are willing to give to them. This isn’t the kind of relationship we should want with God.

When this man of song calls out to God he is putting his whole heart into it. What he was calling out for was too important to leave to a half-hearted prayer. He was begging for God’s salvation. He knew that only God could give it and therefore only He should be asked. The song writer didn’t want to take any chances though about God not hearing his request and so he fervently called out to the Lord.

This is not to say that we have to convince the Lord to save us. We can’t think that begging God is how we gain salvation, it isn’t. But there are things that we are to fervently call out to Him about. Things that only He can fix or work out. We may not even know what words to use at time because the thing we are requesting comes from a gut-wrenching pain. One of these deep pains should be the pain of seeing those we love living away from the Lord and His commands. This should bring us the greatest sorrow and have us at the feet of our heavenly Father begging Him to call them to Himself. To love the Lord and His law should bring us to our knees calling out to Him and continuing to obey His commands.

Making It Personal

When was the last time that you called out to God with fervent prayer? How concerned are you about the salvation of those you love? How concerned are you about the souls of strangers?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever prayed really hard about anything? How important was the thing you prayed for? Have you ever prayed that someone you love would come to love Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive us for the half-hearted way we often pray. And forgive us for not praying for the salvation of others like we should. Give us hearts not only to pray for their salvation but the boldness to speak to them about You. In Jesus’ name. amen.
