Panning for God
2 Peter 1:12-21
Verse 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.
If someone is looking for beach glass along a rocky shoreline it is best to wear water shoes so you can kick the stones about a bit to see the hidden treasures of colored glass. Today we start such a treasure hunt with some of Jesus’ parables.
Delving is defined as a detailed, yet careful search for information. This is something that should describe our time in Scripture yet oftentimes we read just to say that we read our daily passage. But treasures of found through digging and searching.
That is going to be our goal in this new series. Our specific study will be about some of Jesus’ parables but hopefully along the way we learn some delving techniques that we will be able to use going forward. To grow spiritually we must know how we are to grow and that is why it is important to know the deeper lessons of Scripture.
Jesus spent His adult years speaking the deeper truths of Scripture that the religious leaders of the time didn’t make the effort to find. In Acts 17:11 the people of Berea were counted as more noble and open-minded because they dug deeper into the Scriptures to make sure that what Paul was saying was true. One of the benefits of digging deeper is learning more not just about the topic you are studying but the things you find along the way.
So let’s gear up for some treasure hunting! Just as we need the water shoes to walk among the jagged edges of the rocky beach we need to make sure we are prepared to excavate the parables that Jesus gave. These stories become so familiar to us that we tend to miss little pieces of the story that we could learn from. And just as those small bits of beach glass will remind us of a vacation we took, the tidbits we learn as we delve into the parables will remind us of the lessons the Spirit is teaching us as we study Jesus’ teachings.
