Verse 11 I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.
We talked yesterday about the importance of being in the Word frequently so that we can reflect God's purity. Today the psalmist teaches us one of the key ways to make that happen.
Memorization. A word that doesn't sit easy with many of us. What is it about this word that we fear? One thing is that we fear we can't actually do it. We may fear it as it makes us think of our school days and trying to memorize all the needed facts so that we can pass the next test. We spent endless hours cramming our minds with things we felt we would never need. And while we will never use some of the things we learned, we will use more than we realized.
Memorizing Scripture shouldn't just be about learning facts as we do in school. It should be about getting to know Him better. And the more we know Him the more we will know His ways. This is important if we are wanting to live as He wants us to live. The psalmist says he hides God's Word in his heart to keep him from sinning. This should be our motivation for memorizing Scripture.
We should be motivated to want to stop sinning, but are we? We need to be honest with ourselves about this. How serious are we about not sinning? It is one thing to say we don't want to sin and another to actually put in the work to stop. A person can't lose weight if they refuse to watch what they eat and exercise. Nor can a person stop smoking if they are unwilling to stop reaching for the pack of cigarettes.
When we become serious about memorizing the Word we need to think about what is important for saving to memory. While important to the whole of Scripture, though many would question it, the genealogy passages are not necessarily something we need to put to memory to learn to obey Him, but there are many passages that will be important to our Christian walk. These are the passages we should start putting to memory so the Holy Spirit can use them to remind us of His ways when temptations arise in our lives.
When we put in the work of learning His ways and memorizing them, He will be faithful in reminding us of these verses as things come up in life. We need to be intentional about what we memorize so we can fight battles that will come and try to steer us wrong in life.

Have you memorized any verses? How do those verses help you not sin? What verses do you need to memorize today?
Father, thank You for creating us with the ability to memorize Your Word. Give us wisdom as we search out which passages we need to memorize to fight the sin that comes into our lives. In Jesus' name, amen.
