Packing for the Journey
Updated: Mar 26
Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
No matter our age we all know something about packing for a trip. Which shirt should I pack? Which stuffed animal should I bring to sleep with? And don't forget the small necessities such as a toothbrush and toothpaste! But what about packing an umbrella? No one likes to think about rain on vacation but it is best to be prepared.
On the journey of life there are times when life doesn't go like we have planned or would like either but it is better if we are prepared when those times come.
In our reading today Jesus had an unwanted visitor on His trip into the wilderness. Jesus wasn't on a vacation. He was in the wilderness to prepare for His journey to the cross. His unwanted visitor was His enemy (and ours), the devil. Jesus didn't want to sin so the way He took care of this unwanted guest was by saying truths He knew from the Bible.
Because we are going to be following Jesus in the way of the cross, we too will come upon some unwelcome visitors on our trip. These visitors may show up as doubt, discouragement, sadness, fear or other things that could cause us to forget why we are on the journey. We need to pack for this trip like Jesus did - with verses that we can say to speak truth into our problem. Which verse(s) are you going to pack for the journey?
Making it personal
Which unwanted guests are showing up on your journey? By identifying the things that trip you up it will be easier to find verses to combat these unwanted hazards. Pick one tripping hazard and find a verse to help you deal with it. Memorize that verse by writing it down and posting it where you will see it often.

Memorizing verses helps us take our journey with Jesus. Memorize Psalm 119:11 (at the top of the page) to help remind you how important it is to know verses in our heart. Draw a picture to help you learn the verse.
Heavenly Father, we want to travel this journey well. Please help us memorize verses to help us on this journey. Thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit that helps us remember these verses when we need them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
