Our Guide's Training Years
Updated: Mar 26, 2020
Luke 2:22-24, 40-52 Verse 40 And the child grew and became strong; He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on Him. Verse 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
What is one of the things needed to be a good guide? A knowledge of the place and topics to be covered on the tour. It is even better if the guide has a personal knowledge versus just learned facts. This journey is no different.
Thankfully, in Jesus, we have a guide with personal knowledge. Jesus' first recorded visit to Jerusalem was when He was just 40 days old and then every year Jesus' family would head to Jerusalem for Passover. In our readings today we learn about one of these trips.
In verse 40 we see that Jesus was growing physically, as all boys would be, but that He was also filled with wisdom and had the grace or favor of God on Him. God was using His earthly parents to teach Him things He would need to know about God and the history of God's people. At just 12 years old Jesus is already acting as a guide in training. As the family heads home from the festival Jesus stayed behind to talk with the leaders in the temple.
Right after this story about 12 year old Jesus it says that Jesus grew in wisdom, physically and in favor with God and man. It is important to think about the last part of this verse. If Jesus had been rude to the leaders when He was talking to them, they wouldn't have liked Him and wouldn't have listened to what He had to say.
If we are to follow Jesus in the way of the cross, we need to examine ourselves and our lives. Where do we need to grow in wisdom so we can live in the way of the cross?
Making it personal
In what areas do you need to grow in wisdom? Jesus grew in wisdom partially due to the instruction of His parents; how open are you to instruction or correction that could lead to wisdom? Do you have people in your life that you are speaking wisdom to so they can grow?
Making it personal kids
Jesus learned wisdom from His parents; do you listen and obey your dad and mom so that you can grow like Jesus? Look at a map of Israel in Jesus' time (here's a link of you need a map: https://www.biblestudy.org/maps/land-of-palestine-in-new-testament-times-map.html) Can you find Jesus' hometown of Nazareth? Now find Jerusalem. Trace the path between the two. Would that have been an easy journey?
Father God, we thank you for Jesus' example for us. Please help us to grow in wisdom and favor with You and those around us. Help us grow to be more like Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.
