Our Awesome God

Exodus 15:1-18

Verse 11 Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

Today we come to the end of our lessons of the exodus. We have seen 3 things about our mighty God – His providence, His power and His provision.

In today’s passage we see Moses and his sister Miriam lead the people of God in a worship service. They are singing of His amazing deliverance. They recount the way God, in His providence, led them out of the slavery they had been living in. Then they point out His mighty power in bringing them through the depths of the sea. He has provided them with safety and victory.

If we were to break out into song about His providence in our lives what kind of things would we list? Can we look back at the things that have happened in our lives and see the hand of God fitting all the pieces together, preparing us to get to know Him better as we have to lean into Him and His guidance? We need to be intentional about learning to see the things that pop up in our life as part of His plan to do things for our good and His glory. Because as it says in Romans 8:28, He works all things for the good of those that love Him and that He has called for His purposes.

This song is full of pictures where God displayed His power. He continues to display His power in our lives. He may not have opened a sea for us to walk through but there are many ways He does display His power. Water is a powerful piece of nature. For example we can see how water dripping on a rock for an extended period of time will change the shape of the stone. Nature displays His mighty power in so many ways. Sometimes it shows up in wonderful ways and other times His power is for destruction as displayed with a powerful tornado or hurricane. God showed both during the crossing of the Red Sea and both are praised in this song as they praise Him for removing the water for their journey through and they also praise Him for the destruction of their enemies from the crashing waters.

We also know of His provision in our lives. He has provided so much for us that we have come to take much of it for granted. Compared to the Israelites in the desert we are living a life of luxury but the truth is that it is all His provision. Would we be able to afford anything if He wasn’t providing for us?

Our God is awesome and it is past time that we start keeping an eye out for His providence, power and provision in our lives. And let’s not forget to sing of His mighty work in our lives.

Making It Personal

How have you seen God’s providence in your life? Has He revealed His power in your life? How has He provided for you?

Making It Personal Kids

How powerful is God? Can He care for you in every area? Name things you see in nature that show God’s power.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for all the ways that You have proved Yourself to us, Your people. Thank You for all the providence, power and provision You display daily in our lives. You are the awesome God and we worship You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
