Lifting Our Hands

Psalm 134

Verse 2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord.

After yesterday’s discussion about praising in the dark times of life, today we will look at the joy of praising Him in the light.

It is easiest to praise Him when things seem to be normal and going well. But do we? It is so easy to just take those moments and enjoy them without actually taking the time to praise Him for the regularity of life and the blessings that come our way. We can be so distracted by the good in life that we forget where it comes from.

Praising God must be a way of life for us, in the good and the bad, but we can’t allow it to become so regular in our lives that we forget to think about the heart behind our praise. If we aren’t being genuine in our praise it isn’t true praise. When we miss thinking about who we are praising, we actually miss praising.

If we are giving praise without thinking about God, we are really just showing happiness about what we are going through. Praise must focus on God as we think about why He would do for us what He is doing. He isn’t doing it because of who we are but because of who He is. If we don’t focus on Him we may actually be praising selfishly.

We can’t be thinking that we deserve what we get when we are praising God. Truthfully we don’t deserve anything. We don’t even deserve the air we breathe but God has given it. We have been given the very essentials we need in life. A planet to live on, the air to breathe, food to eat and families to love. And He gave all this because of who He is.

He has given us everything we have. He deserves our praise but not just a quiet whisper. The psalmist reminds us that praise isn’t just about an inner feeling. He tells the travelers to lift their hands in praise and that speaks of leaving the fear of praising Him quietly behind them and praising Him boldly.

Making It Personal

Where is your focus during praise? Who is God to You that He deserves your praise? What can you praise about today?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean to praise? Is it ok to praise so others know it? What are you going to praise Jesus about today?

Closing Prayer

Father, we praise You! You are worthy of all praise because of who You are. Help us see You for who You are so that our praise will always be true and directed to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
