Law Proximity

Psalm 119:145-152

Verses 149-150 Hear my voice in accordance with Your love; preserve my life, Lord, according to Your laws. Those who devise wicked schemes are near, but they are far from Your law.

We talked yesterday about the importance of praying with God’s will in mind and we see in our verses today that the psalmist understood the need to be close to God and His law.

Just as a parent wouldn’t give their child something that they know would not be good for them in the long run, the Father knows what is best for us. The man of song asks that the Lord hear his prayer in accordance to His love. This is something that any loving parent does. Just as a parent can heat their child’s voice and pick it out of a room of noisy children, our loving Father hears our petition among the many voices talking and not only hears what we say but hears the tone of our crying.

He also asks the Lord to preserve his life according to the law. We have mentioned at various times in our study that the Lord keeps His people safe through obedience to the law. Just as a toddler is kept safe from the hot stove by obeying mom and dad’s telling them, “no” a child of God is kept from heartache when they obey the commands He has given. There is less opportunity to get hurt in our sin if we are doing our best to obey.

The psalmist seems to see himself between the ones that are devising against him and the law. He sees the seemingly simple truth, the fact that those who are doing evil are not close to the Lord. While this may seem obvious we often fail to see our struggles in relation to where we stand with God. As a person who is following God and His laws, we should be able to see that our struggles could be tied up with being closer to the law hater than they are to the law. They have a great hate for the law and since we are closer to the law than they are, we are in direct line for the hate being focused on the law and Law Giver.

Being near the law and its Giver is important for our spiritual growth. This awakening that the psalmist had by seeing that the despisers were far from the law, gave him the reminder that he needed to see the truth of why it was important to stay close to the law and keep his focus on the Lord and His law. He was learning to understand that this is how his life was preserved by the law.

Making It Personal

What do you think about the fact that the Lord hears your prayers because of His love for you? Do you see evidence in your life of God preserving your life through the law? Where do you stand in proximity to the law?

Making It Personal Kids

How does it make you feel knowing that Jesus listens to your prayers because He loves you? How can you tell if someone likes obeying rules? Do you like obeying Jesus’ rules because you love Him?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for calling us close to You and Your law. Please help us see our need to stay close to the law, not for mere obedience but because we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
