Knowing the Fine Print

Psalm 119:41-48

Verse 48 I reach out for Your commands, which I love, that I may meditate on Your decrees.

Having discussed in our time together yesterday that we must stand up and speak the truth of the law, the psalmist reminds us that this comes from a heart of love for the law and how we need to keep seeking His law.

The psalmist begins this verse saying that he reaches for God’s commands. He doesn’t say that he had reached in the past or that he would reach in the future but that he was reaching. It shows that he was currently seeking God’s law and implies that he was in the habit of doing it. This was not just a one-time thing in his life but was a way of life. He never wanted to lose the hunger he had for seeking after God’s standards.

There aren’t many of us that jump at the chance to study law. In fact most of us don’t even like to read the small print of legal jargon that comes with various things in daily life. Just give us the main idea and we will go with it. We don’t think that those little bits of info will mean much to us anyway and so why waste the time reading it. But those pieces of info can hold vital information that will affect us in the long run. That privacy notice that we just hit accept on without reading may actually have given the developer the rights for our private info.

If we treat the law of God the same way we do the small print we will find that we are missing the deeper meaning of God’s message to us. We will miss the ways that His law can save us from the moments of temptation that come and stress our life. We all have those moments that come up that we don’t know how to deal with but we can be sure that if we are studying the law of God we will see the answers we need.

The law reminds us of the goodness of God and gives us the wisdom we need to avoid bad choices in life. But it isn’t just seeking them that will help us be ready when moments of temptation come. We must meditate on them and make them a part of our thinking. We need to be so aware of them that they are always at the forefront of our minds. This is when we truly know the law and are growing in our relationship with the Ruler of our lives.

Making It Personal

How intentional are you about reading the small print of the law of God? Has knowing portions of the law helped you fight the temptations that come? What law do you need to meditate on today?

Making It Personal Kids

Why is it important to know the reason behind the rules? Does knowing the reason help you want to obey? How could thinking about the rules help you remember them?

Closing Prayer

Father, we thank You for Your law and the love behind it. Give us a hunger to learn the depth of Your law and a desire to obey it in our heart, mind and body. In Jesus’ name, amen.
