I Want It All!

Luke 12:13-21

Verse 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Yesterday we were talking about how this younger brother was quite selfish and today Jesus gets specific with him about his sin. In today’s key verse Jesus goes beyond what the younger brother said and pointed to the root of his sin issue – greed.

Greed isn’t something we talk about very often and we don’t want to think of it applying to us. But greed is a big issue, or at least potential big issue, in our lives. It appears more subtly than we may think and that is why this is a sin that can hide in our lives like it was hiding in this brother’s life.

Greed isn’t always about money as is often thought. We can find greed in various portions of our lives and have likely had greed practiced against us as well. Greed is about wanting more and more and never having enough. Although it may have other names or subcategories it is always about wanting more than we have. Maybe for us it is a certain kind of collectable or maybe we have an every growing desire for bigger and better things in life. Maybe we are greedy with someone else’s time.

No matter how it shows up in our life it all speaks to the same issue – a lack of Jesus being enough for us. When we go after things and seek the latest and greatest it shows a lack of being content. Contentedness is something that should mark a Christian because we should know that our worth as a person has nothing to do with what we own. Things will never make us the person that Jesus wants us to be.

God is the only one that we should be seeking more of. We should be seeking more of His holiness in how we live. We should be working at being more and more like Jesus. And we should be desiring more and more of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives. This means we should be taking more and more time with God in prayer and reading our Bibles so that we can see ourselves more and more from His point of view which will bring us to repentance and surrender to His work in our life.

Making It Personal

What portion of your life do you see greediness? Is it for something that you truly need or is it simply a want for more? What changes do you need to make in your life to rid your life of greediness?

Making It Personal Kids

What do you think greed is? Do you think you are greedy about anything? Does Jesus want you to be greedy?

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive us for the times that we have wanted something that isn’t You. Forgive us for not being content with You and the many things You have provided for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
