I’m Watching You, Kid!

Psalm 121

Verse 8 …the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Knowing that the Lord will never leave us or forsake us should bring us peace because we look to Him for comfort in the times when life gets hard. We mentioned yesterday that the Lord watches over our lives but let’s look at that a bit deeper as the psalmist elaborated just a bit about it.

There are those who have been scared by the thought of God watching our every move. They fear that He is watching us to bring judgment and curses to us. While it is true that He will dole out discipline as needed, He isn’t looking, hoping we will fail. If He were waiting for us to fail He wouldn’t walk with us as we talked about a few days ago.

When we think about His watching our comings and goings we need to think of it more as a loving parent who is looking out for the wellbeing of their child. We don’t leave the hot burner on and sit back and watch to see if the toddler will find it and learn the lesson of the stove being hot the hard way. When the young child is learning to walk we stay close and make sure they don’t teeter towards the sharp corner of the coffee table. And when they are learning to drive we teach them to be cautious, always aware of the other traffic but we know not to make panicked gasps or screams that will startle the new driver.

And just like our loving heavenly Father we don’t just look out for the physical dangers that could come their way. We try to prepare them for life by guiding them spiritually so when the potholes of sin come along they won’t head straight for them. We teach them early the need to be in the Word daily so they will know God’s will.

This is the kind of loving watch the Father is giving us. He makes it His business to know what is going on in not just our lives but in our hearts and minds too. He tenderly watches as we learn to identify the things in life that trip us up spiritually. The Holy Spirit guides our hearts and minds through prompting us to remember the things He has taught us through studying the Word and the Bible teaching we have heard throughout our lives. This is what the psalmist knew the Jewish people would be wise to worship God about as they journeyed together. It is good for us to remember as we prepare to worship as well.

Making It Personal

What does it mean to you that the Lord watches your comings and goings? Have there been times along the journey that have been difficult because you weren’t listening to His guidance? What do you need to listen about today?

Making It Personal Kids

How does it make you feel knowing that Jesus is watching you every moment? What could you worship Jesus about because He is always watching out for you? Do you need to listen to His direction about something today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for Your watchful eyes. Give us a heart to listen to Your guidance and follow You every step of our life journey. In Jesus’ name, amen.
