Holy Perfume

Psalm 133

Verse 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe.

We have spent a few days talking about how wonderful it is to be in unity and the psalmist continues that thought in our verse for the day.

While the idea of oil being poured on our head may not seem very enticing it had a very special meaning to God’s people. This pouring of oil was part of the ceremony of anointing a person for king or other official positions. It was a special thing, a blessing and an honor.

The particular incident being referred to here is from Exodus 30:22-33. Though the passage in Exodus doesn’t speak about it flowing down Aaron’s beard, as it may have been more of a poetic reference, this anointing was a very special moment in the history of God’s people. It was the beginning of their official, organized worship of the God of creation.

This oil that was used to anoint Aaron and his sons was the same oil that was used to anoint the articles in the tabernacle and the tabernacle itself. It wasn’t just an oil that was poured on everything. It was a sacred mixture that was declared holy or set apart by God Himself when He gave the special formula. No one else was to make this special blend for themselves or anoint someone that wasn’t one of Aaron’s bloodline or they would be banished from the nation.

This anointment was not really a liquid as it was 37½ pounds of spices mixed with 1 gallon of olive oil. This oil paste was fragrant. It would have been obvious when Aaron or his sons were near. This would have seemed like he had bathed in his anointing and no one could miss his special relationship with God. The scent would remind people of God and that would lead to worship.

Our unity should have the same effect as the oil mixture. It should be so evident that we are unified that those around us can’t miss the aroma of happiness that comes from our unity. Jesus said that they would know we are His followers by our love for one another (John 13:35). Are we oozing of love?
