Heavenly Silos

Psalm 112

Verse 3 Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever.

One thing we too easily forget is that this is not the life we are to be living for. Yes, it is important to be present and effective in this life but our main goals should not be solely based on the results for this earth.

The psalmist points out in our key verse for today that it is the wealth of righteousness that lasts. We spend so much time and effort trying to get the latest stuff that we think will make us happy. We compare our lives with the people around us that we admire and we may not even realize that we start trying to shape our lives to look like theirs.

Jesus said during His sermon on the mount that we should be storing our treasures where they will not rot or rust. He ends that topic in His sermon by saying, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21) Jesus knew what we can only hope to partially grasp while here on earth, when we store up for this life we show that we actually worship the things of this world.

The psalmist is trying to help his singers to understand that worshiping God for who He is means laying down the desires of this world. True worship is about God. It is that simple. We will be blessed through our relationship with Him. And while we will gain some blessings in this world as He cares and provides for us, He doesn’t want us seeking the treasures of this world. So what treasures does He want us going after?

The treasures of righteousness are those that draw us nearer to Him and deepen our worship of Him. It is only natural that the more we know of our loving Father, the more we will want to please Him. The treasures of heaven are works that are done to benefit the Kingdom of God. Treasures such as a life lived in a way that points others to Him or bringing Him glory through our words and deeds. This is the life of worship, a life wholeheartedly surrendered to Him. That is where everlasting richness of life exists.

Making It Personal

What spiritual treasures are you storing up? Is your worship directed heavenward or is it earthbound? What item of worship needs to be changed in your life?

Making It Personal Kids

What is the difference between treasures of earth and treasures of heaven? What are some ways to store up the heavenly kind of treasures? Do you have those kind of treasures?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You a way to store up treasures where they can’t be destroyed. Give us a greater desire to build up a storehouse of treasure in Heaven and show us what to store up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
