Godly Details

Psalm 124

Verse 1 If the Lord had not been on our side— let Israel say—

Today we start another song of ascent from David. This psalm of preparation for worship is focused on thanksgiving for the way the Lord had worked in the past and assurance that He would continue to work on their behalf.

"If the Lord had not been on our side..." Have we ever said something like this? This may be something we should ponder more often in our lives. If we were to stop sometimes and focus on what God has done in our lives it would no doubt give us a joy in Him that would have us amazed at just how often He works on our behalf and how easy it is for us to take His work for granted.

We even have a day set aside in November that we are supposed use as a day to focus on His faithful abundance to us and yet the day tends to become more about family and food than about thinking about God and all that He does. If we were to compare the time of actual thankfulness to God on that day with everything else done that day, which was most important to us? Sadly our answer to that question likely shows a lack of true thankfulness.

When we look at our lives and examine the various things God has done for us in the past and take the time to see the various angles of things He has done we will realize just how much He does for us. It may not be wrapped as pretty as we would like. In fact it may have been wrapped as cancer or an accident or maybe the loss of our job. Things that on the surface didn't seem good at all and at the time brought us to the end of our rope. But what if at the end of our rope was right where He needed us?

We may not enjoy the hard times of life but we need to be intentional about seeing details of His working through our lives. Maybe that health issue that had us in the hospital allowed us to share God and His goodness with someone we otherwise wouldn’t have met. Maybe that loss of work caused us to depend on God as we never had and helped us see that all we have is His. God is in the details and we need to look for Him there and praise Him for each detail that makes up His bigger plan.

Making It Personal

What are some times in your life that you can see God working in and through the details? How often do you thank God for His working things out in your life? What detail has He worked out in your life today?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some things in your life that seem small but that you can praise Jesus for? Why should you praise Jesus for even the small things that He does in your life? What can you praise Him for today?

Closing Prayer

Father, we praise You that You care about the details in our lives. Help us to see Your handiwork in our lives, even in the hard times and remember that the praise always needs to go to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
