God’s Unfailing Love

Exodus 15:11-13

Verse 13 In Your unfailing love You will lead the people You have redeemed. In Your strength You will guide them to Your holy dwelling.

We have looked at hope, peace and joy and today we light the candle of love.

Through all of history there are evidences of God showing His love for His people in varying means of rescue. Today’s passage is the song that Moses sang after the crossing of the Red Sea. God was leading His people with a pillar of cloud in the day and a pillar of fire by night. This leading was obvious to the people and they had no doubt that it was God who had just rescued them. The next generation of His people would experience a similar event after they crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land.

Once the people were established in the Promised Land, they begged for a king because the countries around them had kings that they could see and so they wanted one too. God allowed them and when the first king walked away from God, He showed His love for His people by choosing David, son of Jesse, who was a man after His own heart. But sadly the people didn’t return that love and within 14 generations they were exiled in a faraway land due to their disobedience. But that didn’t mean that God didn’t love them.

Even in their exile God was showing His love. The other day we talked about the three young men who were thrown into the fire because they were obeying God instead of the ungodly king. God showed His love for them by protecting them and giving them a visitor in the fire. This is only one of the stories of His showing His love while His people were in exile. He also showed His love by not leaving them in the foreign country but bringing them back to the Promised Land.

Through all those generations God was setting the stage for the greatest show of His love. The promise He had made to the serpent in the Garden of Eden after sin had entered the Garden was that one of the women’s descendants would crush his head. This promise was repeated and repeated throughout the history until fourteen generations after the return from exile. That is when God’s greatest show of love came to earth in the form of a tiny Babe that was wholly God and wholly man. That is the only way this gift of love could fulfill the promise of living and dying and yet being perfectly sinless to act as the once for all time sin sacrifice. This is love in its purest form.

Making It Personal

When is a time in your life that God has shown His love for you in a special way? How did you feel during that time? Have you found the love of His gift of His Son?

Making It Personal Kids

How does God show His love? Have you ever felt His love? When did you feel it?

Closing Prayer

Father, we see all the times that You have showered Your people with Your love. We know that You have shown us Your love in the gift of Your Son. Please help us be looking to Him during this season instead of the trappings of this world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
