Giving Praise and Enjoying Peace

Psalm 119:161-168

Verses 164-166 Seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous laws. Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing can make them stumble. I wait for Your salvation, Lord, and I follow Your commands.

Having once again talked about his foes, the psalmist turns his focus fully on the Lord and His law in this song of prayerful praise.

There are few things in our lives that we do faithfully 7 times a day, especially things that are not required for living. To be praising God for something seven times a day shows the amount of time we have spent thinking about it. The fact that the psalmist says he praises God seven times a day for the laws that He has given, shows he spends a lot of time dwelling on the law. He also acknowledges that God is the giver of the law since He is the one being praised for it.

Anyone who spends a great deal of time on any given topic begins to understand it in ways that are missed by those who give it a quick, unstudied look. The same happens with the people we spend the most time with, we potentially know them better than those who only spend small amount of time with them. This is why the psalmist knew it was so important to spend so much time and energy on the law and the Lord who gave it.

The man of song continues with the fact that those who are closely focused on the law have a peace that escapes others. He must have known this from experience. The psalmist’s focus on God and His ways has led him to a peace that can’t be explained. When we are walking closely with God, we will see Him and everything else will seem small in comparison to Him.

He doesn’t just find peace, he sees that knowing without obedience is not the same as truly know Him and obeying out of love. He says he is awaiting the Lord’s salvation and that he continues to obey. In the good times and the bad times the psalmist knew he needed to obey the law and embrace the peace that comes with loving the Lord and His Word.

Making It Personal

Have you ever praised God for giving the law? What about the law would cause you to praise? How can you find peace in the law?

Making It Personal Kids

What do you think it means to praise Jesus about the commandments? Have you ever praised Him for the commandments? Do you love to obey them?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the law. Forgive us for not thinking about it and You as often as we should. Please give us a growing desire for truly knowing Your law so we can obey You in every way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
