Getting Back to the Basics
Verse 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Today we start a new series about the essential practices of the New Testament Church. We will examine the various practices so that we can examine our own practices and reevaluate the way we live as the Church.
Every once in a while in life we need to step back and get back to the basics. It helps us get our footing back on solid, biblical ground and reminds us that this life of faith isn’t about us as much as it is about Him.
We all have times in our lives when we need to reevaluate what we believe and why. It is important to come back to the basics so that we remember the truth about the Gospel and the truth about what it means to live a life of faith. It is easy as the years pass to fall into the rut of following a religion like life of faith. A true life of faith will look more like a relationship than a lifestyle.
When we go through life just living it with not much thought, we lose the intentionality of our living out faith. A life of faith must be lived intentionally. If we aren’t focusing on what it truly means to live a life of faith then we will likely find ourselves slipping into a life lived for self and this life. But Christ was calling us into a life that was deeper than that and that is something the followers in the New Testament understood.
The members that made up the early Church were sold out to the teachings of the apostles which came straight from learning from Christ. Some may have known of or followed Jesus’ ministry. Some may have even seen the risen Lord during one of His multiple appearances but they all had one thing in common, the believed in a way that changed their lives and impacted the people around them.
If we are wanting to see our lives changed by the power of the Gospel and see the affect it can have on those around us, we need to get back to the basics. As we journey through these next few weeks let’s be intentional about the choices we are making. May our lives come to show that we are being intentional in our following of Christ.
