Get A Move On!

Exodus 14:15-20

Verse 15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.

Yesterday we were talking about how they were to be still and that God would fight for them but today it seems like a contradictory command of move.

While it seems like a contradiction it really isn’t. They needed to be still on the inside so that they can move on the outside. God needed them to be still on the inside so they could surrender to His command to move. And even though He had gotten their attention to be still and then refocused them on the next step of the journey, He didn’t leave them to their own resources to be still.

We learn in our reading that God made two initial moves before having the Israelites take their first steps in obedience to move. He hardened the hearts of the Egyptians. Just as the Israelites were to be still, God was causing the Egyptians to be filled with unrest. This unrest was driving them to pursue the Israelites at all costs. The second move God made was to have the angel of the Lord move the pillar of cloud/fire behind God’s people so that they couldn’t see their pursuers. This also took away the visual trigger of fear for the Israelites.

God gave Moses the instructions for the next move. This instruction may have sounded strange to the average person to raise the staff but Moses doesn’t seem to bat an eye. Moses knew that if God said something that he should obey it. God had called the man He knew would follow.

There are times in our lives when we also need to be still before the Lord and be ready to move when we are directed. We are generally not acting with a large group of people and so we don’t always need group mentality. There are times when we need to be still before God ourselves and be ready to hear His direction and take the action we need to take to obey Him. He will even go as far as removing the distractions if need be. His greatest desire is for His people to be more in tune to Him. We need to be still, look to Him for direction and then get a move on!

Making It Personal

Has there ever been a time when you felt God leading you to move in some area? Did you move in the way He was leading? Is there something He is leading you about right now? Are you going to obey?

Making It Personal Kids

Why did God move the pillar of cloud and fire between the two groups of people? Why was it good that God’s people didn’t see the Egyptians? Does being scared keep us from obeying sometimes?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the reminder that we are to move when You say go. Don’t let us delay in obeying. Lead us forward, Father. In Jesus’ name, amen.
