Foundational Truth Stones
1 Corinthians 15:12-14
Verse 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
We talked yesterday about how easy it is to take the resurrection for granted because we see it from the end view. Today we start talking about why the truth of the resurrection is so important to believe.
Every point of the Gospel hinges on the resurrection being true. While it is something that the Church through the ages has held to, we need to accept it not as something we have always heard to be true but in the very personal way of knowing what it means for us. Because if we are going to defend this belief, we need to know what it really means.
To establish this belief we need to settle the facts in our mind. We need to establish in our head and hearts that Scripture is fact. Unless we set this fact firm in our heart we will be shaky on every other belief. The knowledge that Scripture is true is the foundation of every other belief we build on it.
Since we know that Scripture is true we know that when it says that Jesus was wholly God and fully human it is true. This is the only way that His death and resurrection would mean anything. Jesus was born of Mary, who was a virgin, so that He could be human but His Father was not human. The Scriptures say that the Holy Spirit came to Mary and she conceived. This miracle was God coming in human form, born of a woman. This means that He was God in the flesh.
This is important to establish as a belief because if He wasn’t fully man there was no way that He could die. And on the other hand if He wasn’t fully God He would have sinned making it so that His dying would mean nothing. He had to die to be the sacrifice for our sins but He had to be perfect to be the acceptable sacrifice.
These are the facts that we need to establish in our hearts and minds so that the resurrection can be firmly set in us as fact. The Scripture is true, He Is God and He died for us.
Making It Personal
How much have you believed Scripture to be true? Why is it important to believe that Jesus was both wholly God and fully human? How firm are you standing on these facts?
Making It Personal Kids
How true is the Bible? Who is Jesus? Why is it important to believe that Jesus is God?
Father, we thank You for giving us truth. We thank You for Your Word and the way it points out the truth of who Jesus is and why He came. Help us grasp this strongly so that we can stand for You when doubters come and question Your truths. In Jesus’ name, amen.
