Food from Heaven

Exodus 16:13-15

Verse 13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.

As we have been learning that God hears His people’s prayers we have also been seeing His provision in so many ways.

When God said He had heard their cries, He set things in motion that same day to take care of them. Try picturing this evening event. The Lord has said He will provide and as the evening gets underway birds settle onto the camp. This was going from being really hungry to feasting on something that was more of a delicacy. Going from feeling down and out to feeling like they were living the high life. God had come through in a major way. It may have only been a one-time feast but remember the Israelites were not future thinking people.

The next morning they were to experience something that they would eat for the next 40 years. Can you imagine eating something daily for 40 years? God sent a special food for them. The heavy dew melted away and revealed small flakes. They were confused as to what it was. They had never seen something like this before. They were instructed to pick up a days’ worth and only a day’s worth.

Once again this was not how they expected God to answer their cries. They were going to have to trust Him that He would provide it day after day. God was leading them to deeper trust in Him. He said He was doing this so that they would know that He was the Lord their God. He was reaching out to them so that they would know who He was. Not only that they would know He was God, who created the earth and could still use His creation to fulfill their needs, but that He was the Lord their God.

The title Lord isn’t just a nice little name that we use for God. No, Lord means we have given Him the top position in our life. He is the Lord of our life if we have fully surrendered to Him. This is what He desired of the Israelites and that is what He desires of us. He will provide for us but we need to surrender to His Lordship to know Him on the deepest level. It is when He is Lord of our lives that we can appreciate His provision for more than just our pleasure and see it for His glory. He still does things so we can know that He is the Lord our God.

Making It Personal

Is He the Lord of your life? How has He provided for you? Have you given Him all the glory for His provisions, whether big or small?

Making It Personal Kids

What do you think the manna was like? Why did God give them the quail and manna? What does it mean to make Jesus Lord in your life?

Closing Prayer

Father, we can’t thank You enough for the many ways You provide for us. Help us evaluate if we actually live as if You are Lord of our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
