Following Requires a Belief That Trusts

Matthew 14:22-33

Verse 31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him.“You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”

Today's reading starts out with Jesus taking time out to pray by Himself. He saw this as essential (as should we). These times of intimate conversation with the Father must have been special moments for Him. A few hours in the presence of God recharged His Spirit.

After His time with the Father it was time to catch up with the disciples who were now a good way across the Sea of Galilee, dealing with waves due to the wind. At least four of these disciples were fisherman and would have been used to being on the sea at night. It was getting closer to dawn when Jesus decides to walk out to them on the water.

Imagine the shock the men felt to see someone coming across the water towards them from the end of the boat that was farthest from the shore! When they see Him they cried out in fear. I think we would have too! He calls out to tell them not to be afraid and have courage. Notice that Peter says, "If it is You..." even though this is a miracle there is still a bit of doubt in their mind.

Jesus is willing to give Peter the walk of a lifetime and Peter takes the step out of the boat. All was fine until Peter let the things going on around him shake his faith. But Jesus was there to lift him up when Peter cried out for His help. Jesus immediately lifted him out and spoke to Peter about his lack of faith. “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Notice Jesus didn't say Peter was faithless but that he only had a little faith. The truth could be said of us too, couldn't it? How often do we become shaky in our faith because we are looking at the circumstances we find ourselves in?

The story didn't end there though. They got into the boat and the wind died down and the men worshiped Jesus, proclaiming Him as the Son of God. They may have only had little faith but they knew who He was.

Making it personal

When are some times in your life when you have found yourself with shaky faith? Did you call on the Father for help? Did that time bring you closer to God and having a more intimate understanding of who He is?

Making it personal kids

What are some things that make you scared? Is there a way you could learn to think about Jesus instead of what is scaring you? Ask your mom and dad to help you think of a way to think of Jesus instead the thing that scares you. Maybe there is a verse you could memorize to help you not be as afraid. Maybe Psalm 56:3 "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You."

Closing prayer

Father, thank You for helping us in our small faith. We know You are God and we do trust You. Help us when we look at the things going on around us instead of our faith in You. In Jesus' name, amen.
