Eternal Cycle of Time

Psalm 132

Verse 14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.”

We talked about how God chose Jerusalem for His dwelling place but isn’t Heaven God’s eternal home?

We have talked about how God lives outside earthly time. Much in the same way, He doesn’t think like we think. We tend to think in terms that are solely earth bound. But since God thinks bigger thoughts than our earthly minds can begin to comprehend, He tends to put things in terms that try to express the thought in words we can understand.

While we read this verse and think about this Temple being God’s house that will last forever, God was saying the praise this house of worship was to bring Him was being established. God was continuing to build the kingdom that He had promised to establish through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. There were many different ways that this was happening.

There had been the calling of Abraham and then the blessing of the promised son, Isaac. There was slavery and captivity. The chosen tribes dealt with opposition and exile. But these were just the foreshadowing of what God was really doing.

God called His people out of slavery and started them on the path to a promised land filled with abundance. After enduring years of slavery they escaped through God opening the sea, only to enter into a journey that, though difficult was meant for their ultimate good. Learning to depend on God for everything that they needed. But once again this was just an image as to what He is really up to.

As Christians, God has called us too. He has called us into places that are not like those in the world around us. He has rescued us from the slavery of sin and released us to freedom to know Him and learn to depend on Him. And He gave us His promised Child. He also promises a place to worship Him forever. In fact, we will be able to worship Him forever and ever, just as He says in this psalm.

Making It Personal

What does it mean to you that you can worship Him forever and ever? What does it feel like to have freedom from your sins? Have you learned to depend on Him?

Making It Personal Kids

Do you have to wait to worship Jesus? What do you think it mean that He will free you from being a slave to sin? How do you depend on Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being beyond time and for Your constant work at keeping Your promises for all generations of Your chosen people. Don’t let us forget to worship You forever and ever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
