Don’t be Afraid

Joshua 1:5-9

Verse 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Yesterday we were talking about how God turned away from Christ as He was hanging, dying on the cross. What does His not forsaking us mean?

After Moses died, Joshua was taking over as the leader of God’s people the Israelites. This had to be one of the scariest positions to be in. He had watched God’s wrath poured out on the chosen people due to their disobedience and knows that he has to lead the people into this new land. Joshua had been to the new land on a scouting mission and knew, to an extent, what lay before him. He is in the position he is in now because he stood up after the scouting trip and disagreed with 10 of the other scouts. 10 of the scouts saw what was in the Promised Land and were too afraid to proceed.

Now Joshua is facing the job that ten of the scouts said couldn’t be done. And though he had said after the scouting expedition that he knew that they could conquer the Promised Land because they had God on their side, he is now facing those foes with no turning back. But God points out that He hasn’t forsaken Joshua. In fact, He wants Joshua to take courage, not in himself but in God.

This passage shows us how God was reminding Joshua that the way to be strong and have real courage is to be close to God through obeying His commandments. God was reminding Joshua that the reason the Israelites, and Joshua in particular, didn’t need to fear what was ahead was because God was with them.

The same thing is true for us. We may feel like the things that we are up against are like giants standing in our way but we have nothing to fear if we are following God. He will never leave or forsake us and so we can stand strong and take courage for whatever comes our way. God has always been faithful to His people and He isn’t going anywhere. So be strong and take courage!

Making It Personal

When do you find yourself feeling weak in life? Is God calling you to be strong and courageous? What do you need to stand strong about today, knowing that God will not forsake you when you are doing His will?

Making It Personal Kids

Why did God have to tell Joshua to be strong and courageous? Do you ever have times that you feel scared and need to remember that God wants you to be strong? What do you need to be strong about today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for always being there for us. Knowing that You are always with us should help us be strong and courageous. Never let us forget. In Jesus’ name, amen.
