Verse 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
The last couple of days we have talked about spiritual rest and today we turn to physical rest.
We all know what it is like to be tired and weak. After an extra-long day it feels so good to put your feet up and lean back. And if we have a busy week we reach the weekend feeling like we could collapse. Some of this is because of the amount we pack into a week, some is the result of poor diet and exercise but some of it is because we don’t know how to rest.
We were created for God’s glory. He had a plan from the beginning and we were part of that plan. But He also created us less than Himself. We were not created as His equal but rather in His image. He knew that our bodies would tire and need rest and He didn’t leave it up to us to get the rest we need. He knew that left to ourselves we may miss this important aspect of our wellbeing and not be as intentional as needed about taking the time to rest. That is why He gave us the day of Sabbath.
When God took the 7th day to rest it wasn’t because he was tired. He was setting the model for His precious created beings. Notice the fact that God rested after creating humans and therefore was living out in front of them what He desired of them. From the very first 7th day it was set aside for rest.
Physical rest is something that comes easier for some than others but we all need rest whether we think we need it or not. When our vehicle’s gas gauge is heading towards “E” we know to stop and fill up and yet in our lives we tend to run as close to empty as possible. We don’t often find a day on our schedule that isn’t packed and therefore don’t find moments for rest. Having a day of rest has to be intentional. We can’t expect to find rest in our lives if we aren’t intentional about it.
We need to understand the deeper need for our bodies. Rest isn’t just about recharging our batteries. Rest allows our bodies to reset. When we are at rest our bodies can do the maintenance things God created them to do naturally. God will strengthen us but sometimes that comes when we heed His call of rest.

Father, thank You for building us for rest. Thank You for Your perfect design. Give us the desire to rest as You have called us to rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.
