Dodging Traps

Psalm 119:81-88

Verses 85-86 The arrogant dig pits to trap me, contrary to Your law. All Your commands are trustworthy; help me, for I am being persecuted without cause.

We talked yesterday about the persecution that the psalmist was feeling from those around him. He gives a little more insight to the form of persecution he was under.

First we need to notice the kind of people who were causing him the trouble. He labels them as arrogant. Jesus knew how the psalmist felt. He had His own share of arrogant people that followed Him around trying to cause Him issues because of the law. They were constantly trying to trip Him up using the law as they saw it. They were trying to trap Him using the words of the law and He tried to help them see the spirit the law was given in.

We don’t know the specifics of the traps that were being set for the psalmist, we can know that each new trap caused him further grief. He has mentioned feeling stressed and we can have no doubt that we would feel the same way. He was likely feeling like he had to be on the constant lookout for what trap was going to be set for him next. He knew that they wouldn’t give up. That is one reason he knew that he needed to be close to the law.

Those that were trying to trap him would try every trick they could find and so the songwriter knew that he needed truth on his side. He knew that the best way to know what was a trap was to be surefooted in the truth. To have this secure footing he knew that he needed to study and meditate on the law. The law holds the truth and truth was his only hope of seeing the trap before falling into it.

We will find, if we haven’t already, that there are those looking to set a trap for us. Our only hope is the same that the psalmist knew. A hope that is firmly planted in the truth of the law. The law that was given from a loving Father. He gave it so that we can know truth, the truth of who He is and the truth of a righteous life. People will come to persecute us and we need to choose to know the truth so we aren’t trapped by them.

Making It Personal

How important is the law to you? What traps has the law kept you from? What can you do to get closer to the law?

Making It Personal Kids

Why would someone want to try to trap you to do something against Jesus? How can the truth help keep you from falling for a trap? How can you make sure you know the truth?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for giving us the law. Knowing truth is vital to being able to stand for You. Truth also keeps us from falling for the traps of those that despise You. Give us the wisdom, through Your law, to live as You desire us to live. In Jesus’ name, amen.
